WHAT IS BHRT?

Bioidentical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT) uses plant-derived hormones that are molecularly identical to the hormones your body already makes, such as estradiol and testosterone. At St. Pete Wellness Med Spa, every BHRT plan starts with lab work and a conversation about your symptoms and goals, so your treatment is personalized to you.

Think you may be experiencing a hormone imbalance? When your body is unable to produce testosterone, progesterone, and estrogen, whether from menopause, aging, surgery, or a traumatic injury, you may notice a shift in how you feel.

  • Loss of muscle mass
  • Weight gain
  • Low libido
  • Low energy
  • Brain fog
  • And more…
  • Hot flashes and night sweats
  • Mood swings
  • Extreme fatigue
  • Loss of sleep
  • Anxiety
  • And more…

It all starts with a simple lab test to evaluate key biomarkers of your health, including your hormone levels. We listen to your story, understand your health objectives, and craft a personalized treatment plan for your body. It’s a partnership that goes beyond hormones. We understand healthy aging looks different for everyone and are dedicated to helping you find what works best for you.

BHRT QUESTIONS, ANSWERED

Here are answers to the questions we hear most about bioidentical hormone replacement therapy.

BHRT is hormone therapy using hormones that are molecularly identical to those your body produces. One common delivery method is a small pellet, about the size of a grain of rice, placed just under the skin of the upper hip that releases a steady, low dose of hormone over several months. Creams, pills, and injections are other delivery options your provider may discuss.

Hormone therapy has both benefits and risks, and candidacy is individual. Your medical history, current medications, family history, and lab results are reviewed before treatment. BHRT may not be appropriate if you have a history of hormone-sensitive cancers, blood clots or stroke, active liver disease, undiagnosed abnormal bleeding, or are pregnant or breastfeeding. Compounded hormone pellets are prepared by licensed compounding pharmacies based on a prescription and are not FDA-approved products.

With pellet therapy, one insertion typically lasts about three to four months for women and four to six months for men. Your provider tracks timing with follow-up labs and symptom check-ins and adjusts your dose over time.

BHRT is often considered by women in perimenopause or menopause experiencing hot flashes, night sweats, sleep disruption, mood changes, or low libido, and by men with symptoms of low testosterone such as low energy, reduced libido, weight gain, or loss of muscle mass. Candidacy is always confirmed with lab work and a medical history.

It starts with a consultation and bloodwork. If pellets are right for you, insertion is a quick in-office procedure (about 10–15 minutes) using local numbing and a tiny incision closed with a steri-strip, with no stitches. Most people return to normal activity the same day, avoiding heavy lower-body workouts, swimming, and hot tubs for a few days. Many patients notice changes within a few weeks; individual results vary.
