Over time, your skin gradually loses the volume and elasticity that keeps it looking tight and youthful. To tighten saggy skin and minimize wrinkles, Eugene DeLucia, DO, and his aesthetic team perform microneedling at St. Pete Wellness & MedSpa in St. Petersburg, Florida. This minimally invasive treatment stimulates your body’s natural collagen and elastin production to significantly improve the tone and texture of your skin without cosmetic surgery. Microneedling Q & A

What is microneedling?

Also called collagen induction therapy, microneedling is a minimally invasive aesthetic technique that triggers your body’s natural healing response to repair skin damage. Microneedling primarily stimulates the production of collagen — the main structural protein in the connective tissue throughout your body. Collagen keeps your skin looking youthful, tight, and elastic.

How does microneedling work?

Microneedling uses tiny needles to penetrate your skin, creating small micro-tears that stimulate your body’s healing response. As your dermis (skin) begins to repair this damage, it triggers new collagen and elastin production, gradually tightening and firming the skin while regenerating your skin cells.

What can microneedling treat?

Microneedling primarily rejuvenates aging skin and repairs long-term damage. This may be the right nonsurgical treatment for you if you have:
  • Acne scars
  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Large pores
  • Saggy skin
  • Hyperpigmentation
  • Brown spots
  • Stretch marks
Along with eliminating imperfections and tightening aging skin, microneedling can enhance the overall texture of your skin.

What happens during microneedling?

When you arrive for your treatment, your St. Pete Wellness & MedSpa provider applies a topical anesthetic to your skin to reduce pain and discomfort. After about 20-30 minutes, they run the microneedling device directly onto your skin to create tiny micro-tears. This should not be painful or uncomfortable. Most people describe microneedling as a slight vibration against their skin.

What happens after microneedling?

St. Pete Wellness & MedSpa recommends hydrating your skin with an anti-inflammatory moisturizer after your microneedling treatment. While your skin heals, it may look red and inflamed, but these side effects should subside over the next few days. Many people notice visible results after a single treatment, but it typically takes three to six sessions, spaced four to six weeks apart, to significantly improve the texture and tone of your skin. Microneedling is a highly effective treatment on its own, but you can dramatically improve your results by combining it with other treatments, such as platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy. PRP therapy uses the platelet-rich plasma in your own blood to stimulate collagen production and cell regeneration. If you think microneedling is the right treatment for you, call St. Pete Wellness & MedSpa, or schedule an appointment online today.
